Tati, Jacques
(1908-1982)
   cinematographer
Born Jacques Tatischeff in Le Pecq, Jacques Tati began his career in the music halls of Paris, where he pantomimed various characters before becoming a celebrated personality of French comic cinema, best known there as the clumsy, good-natured "Monsieur Hulot." Tati was gifted with a keen sense of observation of everyday life, and his art is the effect of a slow and determined characterization of various scenarios: the peasant life (Jour de fête, 1949), the world of the petite bourgeoisie (Les Vacances de M. Hulot, 1953; Mon oncle, 1958), and more ambitious works. As a director (Playtime, 1957; Trafic, 1969), Tati sought to present parodies of mechanization being done at the expense of human dignity. Because he often worked with limited budgets, he produced relatively few films, but these remain landmark comedies.
